‘Kill the boer, kill the farmer’ became a mantra after the Marikana massacre. ESKOM could not provide electricity anymore, strikes in transport and service sectors brought the whole economy of South Africa to its knees, and civil war broke out. South Africa is filled with corruption and political power struggles. During this civil war the Free State was occupied by two families, the “Lancasters” and “Yorks”.
This production, in modern English, is set in a post-apocalyptic South Africa. The year is 2035 and after the war, King Edward IV, a York, reigns, while his youngest brother, Richard III, plots to become king.
Adapted and directed by Thys Heydenrych as his final project for his MA Theatre Directing, University of Essex, London, UK. He started his studies last year September at East 15 Acting School where he had classes in London and Moscow.
