BA Drama and Theatre Arts is a three-year degree where students study four modules: History of Drama and Performance, Drama and Performance Studies, Performance Practice, and Technical Management and Scenography for the first two years of study. In the third year of study, students continue with Theories of Drama and Performance and Fundamentals of Theatre Directing, while selecting a specialisation module: Acting, Technical Management and Scenography, Film Practice or Theatre-Making. 

The History of Drama and Performance modules (DRAH codes) and Theories of Drama and Performance focus on the origin and development of drama and theatre practices. 

The Drama and Performance Studies modules (DRAT codes) examine the theoretical aspects of performing arts with a focus on script analysis, acting techniques, movement studies, speech theory, and film studies. 

The Performance Practice modules (THEP codes) focus on training in acting, movement, theatre-making and voice and speech. In the second and third year of study, students get the opportunity to perform in several productions. 

The Technical Management and Scenography modules (THET codes) focus on all the technical aspects of a production which include design, sound, lighting, costume design, and stage management. 

The Fundamentals of Theatre Directing module focus on the basic fundamentals of directing for stage. 

The curriculum (comprising 360 credits over three years) consists of:

• The undergraduate core module (UFSS1504) is compulsory in the first year of study and may not be counted as an elective although the credits from UFSS1504 will be acknowledged in the final transcript of results.

• Computer literacy module (CSIL1561): (4 credits)

Language foundation module

If the stipulated requirements of the National Benchmark Tests (Academic Literacy ≥ 64%) have not been met, or the results of the tests cannot be submitted, registration for and successful completion of the language foundation module (Module code: CALH1508) is mandatory. The UFS is working with an algorithm to ascertain whether a student needs to take CALH1508 or not. If you are unsure if you have to register for the module, please contact nbt@ufs.ac.za.
