Research

2016 - present

  • Masters in Fine Arts Candidate, University of the Free State (under the supervision of Dr Janine Allen-Spies, Prof E.S. Human and Prof Willem Boshoff)

Scholarly and creative visual art research comprised of interrelated practical and theoretical components, namely, a full dissertation and a solo exhibition in a public gallery. The nature and purpose of this study are to create a body of work that investigates the agency and power of images and how images migrate within the social imaginaries of South Africa. The title of my dissertation is Curios South African social imaginaries: place, desire, design. My research rests on the central question:  How does the migration and clashing of images reveal social imaginaries in a South Africa in the process of decolonisation or coming of age?

2014

  • Graduate in Fine Arts, University of the Free State

Mini-thesis titled Imagination’s chamber: research as art, art as research: the ‘Afrikaner’ identity in flux (2014) and a body of installation work titled Process rendered visible (2014) in the fourth year. In my final year studies, my art practise and research concerned the notion of art as research and research as art; whereby the process of researching and art-making becomes the work, instead of merely process leading up to ‘the work’. This shifts the focus from artwork to the artist and the studio – what Alice Bellony-Rewald and Michael Peppiat referred to as the “imagination’s chamber” (1983). Focusing on my process and considering that the studio and artist mirror one another, lead me to investigate my own ‘Afrikaner’ identity in flux. I focused on language mixing as symptom of anxiety or divided self, experienced by the contemporary ‘Afrikaner’ identity. A body of work including sculpture, drawing, video and photography culminated into one large installation.
