The Junior Odeion String Quartet was established by die Odeion String Quartet Management Committee in 2009 to promote the development of chamber music skills, especially nurturing a love and understanding of the string quartet amongst the young generation of musicians.
It does not have permanent members and is constituted from time to time from carefully selected players from the UFS, the Musicon, or Mangaung Strings Programme. It was introduced to the Bloemfontein public in November 2009 at a performance of the (senior) Odeion String Quartet, playing a movement from a Haydn string quartet.
Its inaugural members – Carmi Nel (violin), Regomoditswe Molosioa (violin), Elsabé Raath (viola) and John Minnaar (cello) – were all students or members of the Odeion String Quartet. Since then it has performed at the Old Presidency and the UFS Music Department. The group receives regular coaching from Sharon de Kock, assisted by the other members of the senior quartet.
In 2010, they won the chamber music division of the ATKV national music competition.
