Staff visit to the CG Jung Centre

Between 30 March-1 April 2007, Prof Sandra Ferreira and Carel van Wyk {Department of Social Work} attended a workshop on Jung’s view of nature at the CG Jung Centre in Rosebank, Cape Town. Both were also responsible for a session.

Prof Ferreira dealt with the theme, Jung’s personal relationship with nature,
and Mr Van Wyk's theme was We know nothing about mankind: the meaning of psychology for modern mankind.

The workshop was headed by Patrick Tummon, a senior Jung analyst, who has studied at the Jung Institute in Zúrich. The workshop was also attended by Lionell Snell {who wrote various books under the pseudonym Uncle Ramsey} and Lynn McGregor from Convivium.

2007

Assaswei 2007 Conference

During the recent Association of South African Social Work Education Institutions (ASSASWEI) Conference in Johannesburg, Dr Roelf Reyneke, Prof Sandra Ferreira and Carel van Wyk presented papers.

The mission of this national association reads as follows: To maintain and support a community of social work educators who are committed to the continuing development of social work education, training, research and practice in South Africa. The purpose of the association is therefore to ensure quality in the training of social workers.

The titles of the papers presented were as follows:

Sewenth PAN African Social Work Conference

Dr Roelf Reyneke and Prof Sandra Ferreira (see photo) attended the seventh Pan African Social Work Conference in Kampala, Uganda, from 20-24 May 2007.

The conference was organised by the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW). The IFSW is described as [a] global organisation striving for social justice, human rights and social development through the development of social work, best practices and international cooperation between social workers and their professional organisations.

The conference theme dealt with the relief of poverty. The titles of Dr Reyneke and Prof Ferreira’s papers were respectively: Using adventure in the fight against poverty: A developmental perspective and An eco-spiritual perspective on poverty.

 

2008

Staff members from the Department of Social Work attend international conference

The International Association of Schools of Social Work {IASSW} presented a conference in Durban in July 2008. The IASSW defines its aim amongst others as follows: The IASSW promotes the development of social work education throughout the world, develops standards to enhance quality of social work education, encourages international exchange, provides forums for sharing social work research and scholarship, and promotes human rights and social development through policy and advocacy activities http://www.iassw-aiets.org/. The exclusive aim of IASSW is therefore to advance social work internationally in the academic field.

Various staff members (pdf) from the Department of Social Work attended the course. Dr Reyneke and Prof Ferreira, Ms Böning and Carel van Wyk read papers at the conference. The titles of their papers were as follows:

1. Using an adventure-based programme (pdf) to empower first-year social work students at a South African University
2. Eco-spiritual (pdf) consciousness as a form of self-care for social workers in the field of loss and trauma
3. A holistic framework to analyse foster care (pdf) services in South Africa
4. Phototherapy (pdf) and the therapeutic handling of adolescents
