The Master of Science majoring in Environmental Management (MSc ENMT) is a 180-credit qualification on NQF Level 9. This degree comprises three coursework modules and an independent research project to be completed over a period of two years. All required coursework modules are to be completed during the first year of study, while the second year of study is dedicated to the mini-dissertation. All classes related to course work modules are presented on the campus of the University of the Free State. 

COURSE STRUCTURE

YEAR 1
SEMESTER 1

ENMT 7905: Research Methods

This 20-credit module introduces students to the process of scientific research. After attending a compulsory contact session, students have to submit written assignments. At the end of the semester, a final research proposal will conclude the semester.

ENMT 7935: Introduction to sustainability science

This 20-credit module introduces students to the historical progression of sustainable development as the integration of economic, social, and environmental aspects. It is grounded on the concept of planetary boundaries, which describes the safe operating space for humanity. For each planetary boundary, students will (1) define indicators for the boundary, (2) identify critical thresholds of these indicators and (3) explore scale-dependencies in these indicators.

YEAR 1
SEMESTER 2

During the second semester, students have to choose between two elective modules. Both these modules will be presented at the Bloemfontein Campus of the University of the Free State. There after students submit written assignments at intervals online. One exam written at one of several urban centres throughout Southern Africa.
ENMT 7965: Environmental Impact Assessment
This 20-credit module focuses on environmental management best practice prior to environmental authorisation.  It introduces students to legislation regulating the environmental authorisation process and describe advances in environmental assessment (land-use planning, strategic environmental assessments, environmental impact assessments and basic assessments). 

YEAR 2: SEMESTER 1 and 2

ENMT 7900: Mini-dissertation

During the first year of study, students prepare a research proposal which will lay the foundation for their research projects. During the second year, students will have to complete a mini-dissertation in the form of a publication(120 credits) which represents independent research within the environmental management sector.
