1. Required documents
Before applying online for selection and admission, please ensure you have the following documents readily available in clearly readable, electronic format:
- A certified copy of your South African ID document or passport (for foreign applicants)
- Certified copies of all previous qualification certificates*
- Certified copies of all previous academic transcripts
Certified copies should not be older than three months at the time of your application.
*Applicants with international qualifications need to provide a SAQA Verification Certificate along with certified copies of their qualifications. For more information on the verification of qualifications, please visit www.saqa.org.za
2. Application for Admission at the Centre for Environmental Management (CEM) is a 2 step process
2.1. Apply online for admission at UFS
All prospective students should apply online for admission to study at the UFS in 2024. You will also be requested to upload the required documents as listed above during your online application. Upon successful submission, you will receive an automated electronic confirmation with a unique UFS student number.

2.2 Apply online for selection at the Centre for Environmental Management (CEM)
Students are selected on a competitive basis. For your application to be considered, you need to complete the online selection form for the PGDip IWM 2023. During this process, you will be requested to upload all the documents as listed above as well as enter your unique UFS student number, ensure that you click the submit button after completing the selection form.
3. Selection
Successful applicants will be notified via email on the first week of December. If you do not receive a written acceptance letter via email from the Centre for Environmental Management by end of December , your application was unsuccessful.
Due to the high number of applications, the Centre for Environmental Management is unable to provide individual feedback to unsuccessful applicants.
Please note: All foreign students are responsible for their own visa arrangements. Once foreign applicants have been accepted, they will have to initiate their own visa applications as soon as possible by applying for police clearance from their home country. Once selected, students can obtain a Letter of Acceptance from the Office for International Affairs at the University of the Free State.
