Admission requirements

The Centre for Environmental Management can only accommodate 30 students per year in the Masters of Science Majoring in Integrated Water Management programme. Due to the high number of applicants, only the best students are selected for the programme.

Students are therefore selected through a competitive process by a panel of academic staff from the Centre for Environmental Management.

Minimum requirements

The minimum requirements to be considered by the selection panel are:

  • PGDipIWM or a four-year degree (on NQF Exit Level 8) or an equivalent qualification with appropriate experience in the water sector will be considered by the University for
admission.Depending on the academic background of the student, additional modules may be prescribed.
  • Where a student with merit does not comply fully with the admission requirements, the Dean, in conjunction with the Selection committee at the Centre for Environmental Management,
may recommend that the requirements be partially waived.
  • As only a limited number of students can be accepted, an application form available from the Centre for Environmental Management ( must be submitted by the end
of September of the preceding year, after which selection will take place.

In addition to these minimum requirements, applicants will be evaluated based on their academic transcripts and the written essays, which form part of the application process.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

Potential RPL candidates should apply for the Master of Science majoring in Integrated Water Management, using the standard application process. Suitable candidates will be recommended by the selection panel to enter the RPL process after provisional acceptance.

Applicants should not enter the RPL process unless they have specifically been recommended and notified by the selection panel.
