Are you interested in becoming a professional in the water sector?

The PG Dip IWM is a part-time, one-year degree, which aims to equip professionals in the water sector with the skills to deal effectively with the complex problems that arise while managing water in a semi-arid environment. 

The water resource managers of today should have skills and knowledge relating to a variety of fields: from engineering, climate, hydrology, ecology, planning, and natural resource management, to environmental law, social development, and governance. They are expected to cross social, environmental, and technological boundaries to address a range of matters relating to sustainable resource management. 

Throughout the programme, students will be lectured by a diverse team of academics and practitioners to ensure that they receive appropriate, up-to-date theoretical and practical training relevant to the water sector.

The Centre for Environmental Management can only accommodate a limited number students per year in the PG Dip IWM. Students are therefore selected through a competitive process by a panel of academic staff from the Centre for Environmental Management.

What are the minimum requirements for this qualification?

  • A recognised qualification relevant to integrated water management at NQF level 7 (typically a BSc qualification or equivalent).
  • Working experience within the water sector will be an added advantage.

In addition to these minimum requirements, applicants will be evaluated based on their academic transcripts and a written essay, which form part of the application process.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

Applicants who have a formal qualification at NQF level 6 (typically a 3-year Diploma), but who have extensive work experience in the water sector, may be referred for the RPL process. This process is handled by the University of the Free State RPL Office and involves compiling a portfolio of relevant work experience.

Potential RPL candidates should apply for the PG Dip IWM, using the standard application process. Suitable candidates will be referred by the selection panel to enter the RPL process after provisional acceptance.

Applicants should not enter the RPL process unless they have specifically been referred by the selection panel.
