Institute for Groundwater Studies (IGS): GEOH6815 Groundwater Hydraulics

Description

This module focuses on the fundamental knowledge, theories, principles, and practices of groundwater hydraulics. Students will obtain theoretical and practical knowledge on the assessment of groundwater resources in terms of the volumes that can sustainably be abstracted.

On completion of the module, the student is expected to:

  1. develop a conceptual model of a specific groundwater-related problem;
  2. apply practical knowledge to conduct various hydraulic tests;
  3. explain and apply the theory related to pumping tests;
  4. evaluate hydraulic test data and interpret the results in order to estimate the sustainable yield of a borehole;
  5. analyse the data from laboratory scale tests on samples to determine hydraulic conductivity or permeability and porosity and effective porosity;
  6. discuss the relation between field and laboratory observations; and
  7. summarise the results of pumping tests in a professional fashion.
