DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

PET 1: Candidate Preparation for Student Governance

On a personal and team level:

  • What do you stand for? What are your values?
  • Are you ready to work hard? (Is everyone clear on their respective responsibilities?
  • Is your ethics in place? (What does the Code of Ethics for your structure entail?)
  • Are you ready for change, diversity, and transformation? (Does your team have a plan to address this?)
  • Are your skills up to scratch? (Which skills can you identify that your team is lacking and should get training on?)

PET 2: Commitment to Ethics and Integrity to your Constituency

Ask yourself these important questions: (Group discussion)

  • Do you know what your core values are?
  • Do you know what to do when someone acts against your structure’s core values?
  • What does a good student governance ambassador of the university look like?
  • What, in your opinion, should a student leader never do?
  • What, in your opinion, should a student leader always do?
  • What does it mean to be accountable?

Moral dilemmas to ponder on...

  • What are the most prominent issues in terms of morals and ethics currently in student governance at UFS?
  • What will you do when your friend or peer leader transgresses a rule/ethical code?
  • Is it acceptable to provide gifts or refreshments to voters during your campaign? Why do
    you say so?
  • What is the role of student leaders during protest action? Are you aware of the moral and
    legal implications?
  • What would the ideal dress code be for student leaders when going to class or attending
    institutional events?

PET 3: Leading during times of Crises

Structures to discuss:
  • What not to do as a leader or a team when crisis strikes.
  • Looking at the behaviours and steps necessary to effectively manage a crisis, how would your
team/EC/council prepare to handle incidences of student protesting on campus?
  • Looking at the behaviours and steps necessary to effectively manage a crisis, how would your team/EC/council prepare to handle incidences related to the Covid-19 pandemic?
  • Identify other possible areas where crises might arise within your leadership domain. Plan how you would prepare to be ready to manage or prevent such a crisis.
