DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
PET 1: Candidate Preparation for Student Governance
On a personal and team level:
- What do you stand for? What are your values?
- Are you ready to work hard? (Is everyone clear on their respective responsibilities?
- Is your ethics in place? (What does the Code of Ethics for your structure entail?)
- Are you ready for change, diversity, and transformation? (Does your team have a plan to address this?)
- Are your skills up to scratch? (Which skills can you identify that your team is lacking and should get training on?)
PET 2: Commitment to Ethics and Integrity to your Constituency
Ask yourself these important questions: (Group discussion)
- Do you know what your core values are?
- Do you know what to do when someone acts against your structure’s core values?
- What does a good student governance ambassador of the university look like?
- What, in your opinion, should a student leader never do?
- What, in your opinion, should a student leader always do?
- What does it mean to be accountable?
Moral dilemmas to ponder on...
- What are the most prominent issues in terms of morals and ethics currently in student governance at UFS?
- What will you do when your friend or peer leader transgresses a rule/ethical code?
- Is it acceptable to provide gifts or refreshments to voters during your campaign? Why do
you say so? - What is the role of student leaders during protest action? Are you aware of the moral and
legal implications? - What would the ideal dress code be for student leaders when going to class or attending
institutional events?
PET 3: Leading during times of Crises
- What not to do as a leader or a team when crisis strikes.
- Looking at the behaviours and steps necessary to effectively manage a crisis, how would your
team/EC/council prepare to handle incidences of student protesting on campus?
- Looking at the behaviours and steps necessary to effectively manage a crisis, how would your team/EC/council prepare to handle incidences related to the Covid-19 pandemic?
- Identify other possible areas where crises might arise within your leadership domain. Plan how you would prepare to be ready to manage or prevent such a crisis.
