The UFS Kovsies celebrate their semi-final victory with Eunice Girls’ High supporters, who came out in full force to cheer them on in the Callie Human Hall.

The University of the Free State (UFS) netball team delivered a spirited performance in the Callie Human Centre on Monday evening, 22 September, defeating Stellenbosch University’s Maties 46-35 in a gripping Varsity Netball semi-final clash.

The atmosphere was electric from the opening whistle, with both teams battling for dominance in the early exchanges. Kovsies, however, showed their composure under pressure and gradually pulled away with precise shooting and resolute defending. By the final quarter, they had built a solid lead that carried them through to a well-deserved victory.

For many fans, the result was more than just a win. “The girls really showed character tonight. They never backed down, and that’s why we’re in the final,” said Lerato, a loyal supporter, outside the hall. Another added: “It was such an intense game. You could feel the energy from the crowd pushing the team forward.”

This triumph sets up an eagerly anticipated Varsity Netball final, where Kovsies will face North-West University (NWU) in the Callie Human Centre on Monday 29 September at 19:00. The showdown promises to be one to remember, as two of the competition’s strongest sides will meet – with the championship on the line.

Staff and students are encouraged to show their support and rally behind the Kovsies as they aim to bring the trophy home. Tickets for the final are available on the official Varsity Sports page at https://www.varsitysportssa.com/tickets

With momentum and home-court advantage on their side, the Kovsies will be hoping for another packed hall and a sea of blue and white to spur them on. All eyes are now on Monday night, where history beckons for the UFS netball team!
