Jerome Jansen, UFS captain and Man of the Match, receives his FNB Player of the Match award after the thrilling 2-1 derby victory against CUT at Shimla Park.
The UFS side came out firing, scoring two quick goals from Kagiso Semenya and Jarome Jansen before half-time to take a 2-0 lead into the break. CUT came back strongly in the second half and managed to pull one back, setting up a tense finish. However, the Kovsies held their composure and defended with grit until the final whistle. This crucial victory has now placed the UFS second in the Varsity Football Men’s Football log, keeping them firmly in the race for a top four finish in the competition.
The crowd was treated to more than just football. Half-time entertainment featured thrilling activations from the event’s main sponsors, including the Suzuki Race, FNB Dance-Off, and Cashbuild Strike-Off game, all adding to the electric atmosphere in the stadium.
Star of the night, Jansen, was awarded Man of the Match for his outstanding performance, contributing to the early dominance that gave the UFS the edge.
Head coach, Mokete Tsotetsi, was full of praise for his team after the game. “I feel happy for the boys for achieving yet another win, more especially at home,” he said.
Reflecting on the match, he added, “The game went according to the game plan. We knew that they would come to us with the long ball, trying to put us under pressure in our own half, and the boys managed them very well.”
Coach Tsotetsi also took a moment to thank the supporters who packed Shimla Park. “We appreciate the support they have been giving us; they must not stop supporting and being behind the boys at all times,” he said.
The victory marks another proud chapter in UFS football, further fuelling the excitement for the remainder of the season.
Next up for team Kovsies is a trip to the Wits Stadium to face Wits Men’s Football on Thursday 11 September. Wits are in third position behind the UFS, with two points separating the two teams; a crunch game as Kovsies fight for a spot in the semifinal.
