Reratilwe Letsoalo, the KovsieNetball captain and defender, applies firm pressure at the post against UP Tuks in the Callie Human Centre.

The University of the Free State (UFS) KovsieNetball team delivered an outstanding performance when they faced the University of Pretoria (UP Tuks) in the Callie Human Centre on the Bloemfontein Campus.

The game, which was played on Monday 1 September and started at 15:00, ended in a resounding 73-37 win for the UFS, much to the delight of their loyal supporters.

From the first whistle, the UFS showed determination, discipline, and a sharp competitive edge. Their attacking combinations proved too strong for the opposition, while their defensive unit worked tirelessly to limit scoring opportunities for Tuks. The energy inside the Callie Human Centre was electric, with supporters cheering every successful turnover and goal.

Head coach Burta de Kock was full of praise for her players after the match, reflecting on the importance of following through with their strategy. “Any win is never secured, but when players stick to a game plan it makes the feeling of a win so much better, and we are thankful for the success,” she said.

Preparation played a crucial role in Monday’s victory, with Coach Burta emphasising the collective effort behind the scenes. “We are blessed with all stakeholders in the preparation of the team, and we are training as far as possible for the different scenarios,” she explained.

Although the match ended with a commanding scoreline, the UFS netball squad knows that their journey is far from over. Coach Burta remains focused on ensuring that the team maintains its momentum. “We try as far as possible to get them to focus in one direction and on the next important step. We have games where we can evaluate our own performance as well as the opponent, and that helps with the focus and goals,” she said.

This victory is a testament to the hard work and unity of the UFS players, who have steadily built momentum throughout the competition. It was also a proud moment for their fans, whose unwavering support continues to motivate the team, both on and off the court.

The university community and fans are encouraged to keep rallying behind the team as they strive for even greater success. With their current form and determination, the UFS netball team has proven that they are a force to be reckoned with in South African student sport.
