The UFS offers a course where the most important feature is the development of a viable, publishable manuscript in Afrikaans – done under supervision of two award-winning authors, Henning Pieterse and Francois Smith. This is also a full academic course, comprising theoretical modules at master’s level. The structured nature of the course makes it possible to be followed by candidates without a completed honour qualification in languages.

The course extends over two years, of which the first is primarily devoted to an applied theoretical grounding (a course in literary stylistics and a research component) with the second year devoted to the completion of a manuscript, i.e. the rounding off of a manuscript during interactive work sessions.

The focus of the structured MA is original literary writing and literary translation that may be presented in any genre, fiction as well as non-fiction, prose as well as drama and poetry.
