Research

My core research domains focuses on general entrepreneurship and small business, women’s entrepreneurship and corporate finance. SMEs play a great role in fostering economic growth and progress in a nation and, thus necessitating the need to find solutions for promoting the growth and sustainability of businesses. I have published numerous academic journals and conference papers on these topics and addressed various conferences and other interest groups on these issues.

In the general entrepreneurship and small business theme, my research has mostly focused on the individual characteristics of entrepreneurs, the factors that contribute to entrepreneurial intentions and how different aspects of an entrepreneur’s internal and external environment foster the growth and success of small businesses either directly, indirectly or in a contingent manner

In addition to contributing to the general entrepreneurship literature, I have also made significant efforts to isolate and study women entrepreneurs. This is because women entrepreneurs have been widely understudied despite their uniqueness and momentous contributions to economic growth. This is a sub-theme of entrepreneurship that is particularly important to me as a female entrepreneurship researcher. My research on women entrepreneurship addresses this issue by showing different ways in which the family and the business intertwine and how these can work to the benefit of women entrepreneurs to foster their success.

In the corporate finance theme, I have focused on the performance of companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) as well as how small businesses use finance knowledge to improve the performance of their businesses.
