“Education… is about attending to things, rather than acquiring the knowledge that absolves us of the need to do so; about exposure rather than immunisation. The task of the educator, then, is not to explicate knowledge for the benefit for those who are assumed, by default, to be ignorant, but to provide inspiration, guidance and criticism in the exemplary pursuit of truth”
(Ingold, 2017:2).
Welcome to the Philosophy and Education Policy Studies discipline. This discipline is currently the academic home of three academic fields, namely Philosophy of Education, Policy Studies in Education, and Social Justice Education.
At undergraduate level, we are responsible for a number of modules in the BEd programme that addresses issues of democracy, transformation, diversity and social justice in education. We aim to promote authentic learning, critical thinking and self-reflection in prospective educators.
At postgraduate level, we offer a number of modules in the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) and BEd (Honours) programmes. In these modules we aim to capacitate students with deep knowledge, critical thinking skills and focused research proficiencies. Within selected modules in the PGDip and BEd (Honours) programmes, we are exploring the emergent field of ecojustice education in particular.
We provide supervision for MEd and PhD candidates within the general fields of Philosophy of Education, Policy Studies in Education and Social Justice Education.
In our discipline, we strive towards innovative and fresh research. Specific areas of research interest include:
- Environmental humanities, post-qualitative inquiry, posthumanist pedagogies, African philosophy of education (Frans Kruger)
