Theories of Drama and Performance (DRHT3700)


This module is a continuation of both the theory (DRAT2707) and history (DRAH2606) modules completed in the second year of study and aligns with students’ elective practice modules on the third-year level.

The module focuses on the development of theatre and film mediums throughout the modern and postmodern period, with specific focus on selected contemporary practices, and includes investigations of selected practices and works of contemporary national and international theatre and film. Students are exposed to the main themes, theories, practices, role-players, and selected works of these periods and assessed on their knowledge and application of theory related to practice.

Unit 1: Analysing the Viewing Experience (Theatre and Film)

This unit aims to develop your ability to engage with and academically analyse live theatre performances and/or film viewing. After completing this unit, students should have a practicable grasp of required theoretical framework necessary for sound analysis and be able to independently prepare for and complete a performance and/or film analysis. This unit aims to equip you with the insight, tools, and sensitivities that will enable you to respond confidently and eloquently to live theatrical events and/or film viewing.

Unit 2: Modernism (Theatre and Film)

This unit covers the history of the development of theatre and film practices associated with Modernism. Attention is given to the broader historical context as well as popular artistic movements throughout the era. The unit specifically focuses on the work of various national and international trend-setting practitioners, movements, and philosophies.

Unit 3: Postmodernism and Beyond (Theatre and Film)

This unit covers the history of the development of theatre and film practices associated with postmodernism. Attention is given to the broader historical context as well as popular artistic movements and practices throughout the era. The unit specifically focuses on the work of various national and international trend-setting practitioners, movements, and philosophies.
