Technical Management and Scenography 2 (THET2605)


This module theoretically and practically explores the technical aspects of the performing arts. Students are introduced to: décor/scenery, properties, lighting, sound, costumes, theatre safety, terminology, design and stage management. The progression of students' knowledge, practical application and skills-development related to the module content will be assessed continuously throughout the module.  

Unit 1: Technical Aspects

In this unit students will:

  • participate practically in a stage production as one of the following:
    • stage manager
    • assistant stage manager
    • sound operator
    • lighting operator
    • costume and/or props master
  • spend 80 work hours during the year in the Department's theatres, completing various technical tasks assigned by the Theatre manager or Mr Thys Heydenrych.

Unit 2: Technical Practice

In this unit students will be expected to:

  • understand and maintain a safe environment in the theatre;
  • understand the principles in the creating of a stage management workbook as pointed out by the criteria as needed by a production (as per the Departmental Stage Manager Handbook)

You will also be expected to demonstrate an understanding of:

  • the theory and basic design principles of décor/scenery,
  • the basic principles of gathering and making of stage properties,
  • the theory, installation, operating and basic design principles of lighting for the theatre,
  • the basic principles of sound theory, installation, operating and design of the sound productions.

Unit 3: Scenography

This unit explores theatre scenography with specific focus on costume, design principles and stage make-up.

In the Costume learning unit, you will be expected to:

  • identify different historical costume silhouettes, details, garments and hairstyles
  • demonstrate an understanding of the basic development and history of clothing
  • conceptualise and design a unique and authentic costume design
  • assemble and model compelling costume pieces from assigned historical periods

In the Design learning unit, you will be expected to:

  • show understanding of the basic principles of conceptualising, drafting and presenting scenic 
    design ideas.

In the Make-up learning unit, you will be expected to:

  • apply knowledge of advanced theatre make-up through the construction of masks and the 
    application of prosthetic make-up.
