Technical Theatre Management (THTM 3700)
The module establishes the importance of informed self-awareness, focus and inner attitude in the work of the theatre technician. The module focus on the development of the student’s technical theatre technique and overall theatrical awareness. Integrating practice and theory, the module combines practical implementation with reflections and discussions on assigned technical tasks/projects.
The Arts Management unit will guide you through marketing and funding processes that you will need to engage with the performing arts industry successfully.
Unit 1: Arts Management
In this unit, the student will be expected to understand the basic principles regarding managing their own affairs as an artist in the South African Performing Arts Industry. The purpose of this module is to develop an understanding of managing yourself as a business. Furthermore, several topics will be covered toward business and project management’s primary principles to provide the student with the necessary tools to assist with future creative endeavours.
The unit is divided into the following aspects:
• The business of the performing arts
• Fundraising
• Brand building
After successful completion of this unit, you should be able to:
• Plan, create and present a fundraising proposal
• Prepare and compile an arts management portfolio which includes a CV, a digital profile and a showreel.
Unit 2: Stage management and Production management
In this unit, a student will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the theory and principles of stagecraft practically in the production process. Students must adapt and compile a stage management workbook for selected productions. They will also compile, formulate and design a complete production management portfolio for selected productions.
Unit 2: Design for Theatre
- Lighting and sound (design, rigging, recording, and setup);
- Working with a set design and set building
Unit 3: Technical Practice
A students must demonstrate the collaborative nature of the technical aspects of theatre specialities by practically performing duties as sound and/or lighting designer, operator and engineer, décor builder, stage manager and production manager.
