A graduate of Rhodes University (BA Hons), and Queen’s University in Canada (MA , PhD). Taught in the History Department at the Durban campus of what was formerly the University of Natal, from 1974 to 1991. Served as Professor of History at Rhodes University from 1991 to 2012. President of the South African Historical Society, 1993-95. Sole author of six books, and co-editor of a seventh. Main fields of research have been British colonialism in southern Africa, with a focus on Cecil Rhodes; South African urban history, mainly looking at Durban; the history and historiography of racism in South Africa; leadership in the modern world; the history of South African universities, with a particular study of Rhodes University.
