Brief definition of what it entails
Arts Management applies business administration techniques and processes to the arts world. It prepares students for a career providing administrative, financial, marketing, and production support in the music industry.

Relevant information regarding this subject matter in the OSM
After successful completion of this module, the student should be able to

  • demonstrate an elementary understanding of the diverse personal and professional skills required in arts administration (specifically the area of music);
  • demonstrate a thorough understanding of publicity, marketing, public and media relations, as well as visual communication (including defining target audiences, creative development, media strategy, and advertising campaigns);
  • demonstrate an understanding of the impact of cultural policy and the criteria of arts councils, relevant foundations and funding bodies, and possibilities aligned within the field in present-day South Africa;
  • demonstrate learned competencies regarding sponsorship, fundraising, corporate partnerships, and the general dynamics of third-stream funding;
  • exhibit a basic understanding of the elementary principles of contract law (regarding the entertainment industry). Applications of these principles will include contracts relating to artist management, general agreements, sponsorship, and the commissioning of new musical works;
  • exhibit an understanding of intellectual copyright from an applied perspective in the context of the arts and entertainment milieu; and
  • demonstrate a broad understanding of the financial and accounting objectives identified for general management; this includes the compilation of budgets, financial statements, business plans, SWOT analysis, and project management objectives.
