embodiment

Embodiment Studies covers a wide range of disciplines and focuses on the sensory multimodality, body-minded first-person experiences within interactions, situations, or events using ever-developing embodied cognition theories.

Movement Studies focuses on functional and expressive aspects of bodily movement as related to instrumental/vocal technique, musical expression, and artistic communication.

We engage in the following areas (among others):

  • Embodied movement as experiential learning activity.
  • Bodily awareness and movement development towards enhancing performance, especially as part of the Stage Craft modules in the Diploma in Music programme for vocalists.
  • Applications of Laban Bartenieff Movement Studies (LBMS) within analytical, pedagogical, and performance studies.

Interesting studies have been done in this field in the OSM, including the following:

  • The application of LBMS towards embodied piano performance
  • Analysing musical gestures from embodied perspectives
  • Embodiment as locus of aesthetic and spiritual musical experience
