Ethnomusicology and African Musics

The Ethnomusicology specialisation programme in the Odeion School of Music aims to nurture students into becoming game-changing cultural entrepreneurs, engaged citizens, and critical thinkers whose expertise and skills would be locally and globally relevant, particularly in the current dispensation. To achieve this, the Ethnomusicology and African Musics modules draw on popular discourses in ethnomusicology to study historically informed and contemporary musical practices in Africa. Hence, all the modules in this programme integrate ethnomusicology concepts in examining musical practices from the different regions of Africa.

The Ethnomusicology postgraduate programme in the OSM

Our Ethnomusicology and African Musics postgraduate programme is designed to support the study of musical practices, musical instruments, musical scenes and contexts, as well as iconic individuals and other agencies responsible for developing and spreading styles and idioms that capture the musical essence of Africa and its diaspora. First, the programme will introduce students to the discourses related to historical and contemporary African musical practices through readings on various themes, such as the representation of Africa, mapping of the continent’s musical practices, and participatory and performative musical expressions. This approach thus enables in-depth and well-grounded exploration of the student’s research topic.
