The OSM Pan-African Jazz Ensemble

The OSM Pan-African Jazz Ensemble, founded by Dr Joseph Kunnuji in early 2025, is a hub for introducing students to key jazz concepts, including chord-based improvisation, ensemble playing, arranging, jazz theory, and harmony. The ensemble also explores how these concepts are applied in various African band traditions, particularly focusing on African groups from the mid-20th century onward. Its repertoire features American and South African jazz standards, works by prominent jazz musicians across the African continent, and original compositions by members. Membership is open to OSM students, non-OSM students within the UFS community, and jazz musicians from the broader Bloemfontein music scene.
