The Unit for Professional Training and Services in the Behavioural Sciences (UNIBS) annually offers a number of internships in counselling psychology. The internships generally run from the beginning of January to end of December each year, and serve to fulfil the internship requirement for registration as a counselling psychologist with the Professional Board for Psychology at the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

These internships involve assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of problems in a diverse client population. Exposure at UNIBS includes, but is not restricted to:

  • Developmental assessment in early childhood
  • School-readiness assessment
  • General scholastic assessment
  • Subject choice assessment
  • Career guidance
  • Medical psychology
  • Individual psychotherapy and developmental intervention with a diverse client population
  • Development, implementation and monitoring of various developmental programmes
  • Exposure to multi-disciplinary practice within various contexts

The internship includes both theoretical and practical training components focusing inter alia upon the ethical practice of psychology, psychological and neurocognitive assessment, cognitive behavioural therapy, a problem-management and opportunity-development approach to counselling, psychotherapy with children, paediatric neurodevelopment, development of case presentation skills and theoretical issues related to the practice of counselling psychology.

Preference is given to applicants with prior practical experience in psychological assessment and therapeutic intervention. Preference will also be given to applicants who are able to demonstrate proficiency in two of the following three languages: English, Afrikaans, and Sesotho. UNIBS reserves the right not to fill the positions in the event that suitable candidates cannot be identified.
