From 4 to 8 April 2022, UFS Career Services hosted their annual Natural and Agricultural Sciences Career Week to help students prepare for the world of work. The programme was packed with information to unlock the career possibilities for students who are skilled and educated in this field. It is easy to get lost and confused about the direction of a scientific career – there are so many options to choose from. Exposure to experts in the field gave students the context they needed to plot their professional paths.

On the first day, students could attend a CV writing and job interview crash course before getting an inside look at the current and future state of animal feeding. With all the media hype about nutrition, it is always good to get balanced and verifiable information from scientists in the industry. Food sources for both animals and humans remain an important topic and matter or concern.

The application of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics was addressed, among others, on the second day of the fair. Human ethics and science research were unpacked, and students could also attend a session by the South African Weather Service.

Midweek saw more industry-specific sessions, coupled with a Virtual Career Fair and opportunities to get academic advice. Construction Management was one of the popular sessions, exploring the future of our built environment.

Many students experienced a sense of relief after attending the week, because it gave them a much clearer career direction.

Many students experienced a sense of relief after attending the week, because it gave them a much clearer career direction. “I received exposure to an entire new field of work that I did not previously know much about,” one student remarked, with another noting: “I finally figured out what I will do from now onwards regarding my career path.”
