EIGHTH lecture in 2019: Notre-Dame de Paris: cathedral and historical novel

Speaker: Prof Naòmi Morgan, Dept of Afrikaans and Dutch, German and French, UFS

On 15 April 2019, the unthinkable happened: Notre-Dame Cathedral started burning. In this last public lecture of 2019 it is fitting to look at the reasons why the date may be considered a cultural doomsday. We shall take a closer look at some of the historical events associated with the cathedral. Because the lecture emanates from a department specialising in language and literature, we shall also review the historical novel which made the cathedral internationally famous: Victor Hugo’s Notre-Dame de Paris. The December holiday is at hand; 2019 may be the year to re-read the novel which turned Notre-Dame into a novel character, or to discover it for the first time?

The lecture will be presented in Afrikaans. Please let us know if interpreter services will be needed.
