NIHSS and SAHUDA PhD/Doctoral Scholarships for South African Students, 2015

The National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS) in association with the South African Humanities Deans’ Association (SAHUDA) is awarding doctoral scholarships in humanities and social sciences at any of the participating South African public universities.

Scholarships are awarded only for South African citizens from designated groups, with a preference to those from previously disadvantaged portions of the population.

The value of the award is R120 000 in the first year. Annual renewals are subject to proof of satisfactory progress.

The maximum period for the award is three years. The application deadline is 5 December 2014.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified students to study full-time towards a doctoral degree in the humanities and social sciences at any of the participating South African public universities.

The main objective of this programme is to promote scholarship in the humanities and social sciences in South Africa, specifically among designated groups.

Scholarships are available to study full-time towards a doctoral degree at any of the participating South African public universities (University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, University of the Western Cape, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University of Fort Hare, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Rhodes University, University of Pretoria, Wits University, University of Johannesburg, University of Limpopo, University of Venda, North West University, University of South Africa, University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of Zululand, Durban University of Technology, and University of the Free State).

The research areas of this scholarship are: Scholarships are awarded in the field of humanities and social sciences.

Who can apply to this scholarship? Only South African citizens from designated groups, with a preference to those from previously disadvantaged portions of the population and successful completion of a Master’s degree, or entering the first year of PhD/doctoral study following an upgrade from a Master’s registration, or registered for PhD study in first year of enrolment.

Benefits of the scholarship: The value of the award is R120 000 in the first year. Annual renewals are subject to proof of satisfactory progress.

Duration: The maximum period for the award is three years. Annual renewals are subject to proof of satisfactory progress. Successful candidates will be expected to sign a contract as regards conditions of the scholarship.
