OSM well-represented at national events during September

OSM students and staff will be travelling all over the country to take part in various prestigious events.

Eljee du Plooy (organ) and Maja van Dyk (viola) was selected to participate in the ATKV Muziq Classical Music Competition held at the University of Pretoria from 4 – 6 September.  They are the students of Dr Jan Beukes and Mrs Jeanne-Louise Moolman.

Alyssa Bouwer (clarinet) and Kgaugelo Mpyane (viola) were selected to perform as soloists with the KwaZulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra and will perform the first movement from the Double Concerto for Clarinet, Viola, and Orchestra in E minor, Op. 88, by Max Bruch.

This concert will be presented as part of the 2014 World Symphony Series, of the KZNPO under the baton of Lykele Temmingh .The Festival gives advanced music students the opportunity to rehearse and perform with a professional orchestra, thereby opening doors to a professional career. Bouwer is a student of Mr Heinrich Armer and Mpyane a student of Mrs Jeanne-Louise Moolman.

Six representatives from the Odeion School of Music will present papers at the Eighth Annual Congress of the South African Society for Research in Music, Wits University, Johannesburg, 12-14 September. The following staff and students will present:

  • Anchen Froneman: “It’s in the way we move” – Performative somaesthetics and Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies
  • Douglas Walter Scott : An interpretation of musical gesture as auditory agential scene analysis
  • Matildie Thom Wium: Jenny Lind and Harriet Grote: Salon Music Events as Patronage in early Victorian London
