Who they are:
The Heidedal Child and Youth Care Centre in Bloemfontein has been providing a safe residential environment for abandoned, neglected, and vulnerable children for more than 30 years. Caring for infants to young adults up to 22 years of age, the centre nurtures and supports children within a structured setting that emphasises stability, education, and personal growth.

Services offered:
The UFS maintains a strong partnership with the centre through research, service learning, and community outreach. Driven by themes of empowerment through education and creativity, UFS departments – including the Faculty of Theology and Religion and the Library and Information Services, as well as the Community Engagement Office – collaborate on initiatives that inspire and uplift. A milestone achievement was the launch of a youth library at the centre, designed to foster a love of reading and academic development. The partnership also extends to outreach campaigns, such as Mandela Day initiatives, which demonstrate engaged scholarship in action. These collaborations affirm the role of theology, education, and community engagement in shaping a better future for vulnerable children and youth.
