Siesta Retirement Home and Hospice Bloemfontein

Who they are:
The Siesta Retirement Home is a residential facility for older adults, offering levels of care that range from independent living to frail care support. It provides structured accommodation, healthcare assistance, and social support for elderly residents, including those facing age‑related vulnerability, chronic illness, or cognitive decline. Within pastoral training, this environment enables students to engage deeply with themes of ageing, loneliness, end‑of‑life preparation, and spiritual care, particularly in long‑term relational settings.

Hospice Bloemfontein is a palliative care organisation dedicated to supporting patients with life‑limiting illnesses and their families through holistic care that addresses physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Its work focuses on improving quality of life, managing pain and symptoms, and offering counselling and support from diagnosis through end‑of‑life care. As a site for pastoral formation, Hospice Bloemfontein allows students to encounter suffering, mortality, grief, and hope, while developing competencies in presence, accompaniment, and interdisciplinary care at the end of life.

Services offered:
Both contexts are integral to the Department of Practical and Missional Theology through TPAS4822 Pastoral Care, offering students direct exposure to pastoral practice in settings of vulnerability, resilience, and profound human encounter.
