Celebrated for its focus on tourism and water preservation, it is a premier eco‑tourism destination, famous for sweeping views of the Drakensberg, natural rock pools, caves, and the majestic king proteas that bloom across the slopes. Thaba Ronto operates as a community‑driven eco‑tourism hub, linking directly to skills development through regional youth training programmes and local entrepreneurship aimed at reviving the Qwaqwa and broader Maloti‑Drakensberg economy. Because the mountain sits in an underfunded rural area, transforming it into an active travel destination serves as a direct vehicle for youth enablement and community upliftment.

Environmental preservation is central to its mission. Dedicated eco‑tourism and conservation teams actively clear invasive alien plants, a process that protects groundwater levels, prevents mountain streams from drying up, and restores the natural flow into local catchments. This work ensures that Thaba Ronto remains both a thriving tourist attraction and a sustainable ecological resource.

Services offered:
In alignment with this vision, Community Development final‑year students are placed at Thaba Ronto for work-integrated learning (WIL), gaining practical experience in eco‑tourism, conservation, and community development while contributing to the preservation of one of the Free State’s most remarkable natural assets.
