Denice Mwasha Banda is currently a PhD student at the International Studies Group, University of the Free State. Her research focuses on gold mining and its toxic ‘afterlives’ in Shamva (1893-2023). Banda examines how gold mining operations and mine closures affect workers and surrounding communities in Shamva. She also holds an MA in History and International Affairs (2022) and a BA (Hons) in History (2020) from the University of Zimbabwe. Her broad research interests include artisanal and small-scale chromite mining and Chinese mining companies, gender, and land distribution. Banda served in the Department of History Heritage and Knowledge Systems at the University of Zimbabwe from 2023 to 2024.
