Welcome to the web pages of the Higher Education and Human Development Research Group. This research group is led by Professor Melanie Walker- the SARChI Chair in Higher Education and Human Development.

The Chair is concerned with advancing social justice and removing inequalities in and through higher education. The main focus of the research programme is therefore to interrogate the role of higher education in advancing or constraining human development. We address questions about the kind of society we want; what is important in a democratic society; and thus, what kind of higher education is valuable and relevant. We research well-being and agency formation, understood as creating worthwhile human capabilities and reducing poverty in society.
