In a moment that will be etched in the archives of South African sports, Karabo Khanye, a dedicated karate athlete from the University of the Free State (UFS), recently received his prestigious South African National Colours. This significant recognition was awarded during the National Karate ceremony held on 21 June 2025 in Durban.

Karabo's journey to this milestone was fuelled by his unwavering commitment and passion for karate. He represented South Africa on the international stage at the Commonwealth Games, where he showcased his exceptional skills and determination. Competing against the best, he brought home not one, but two silver medals, a testament to his hard work and resilience.

Reflecting on his achievements, Karabo expressed his gratitude and pride. "I just feel privileged that I was chosen for the Commonwealth team," he said. "Being able to bring home two silver medals just makes it that much better."

The awards ceremony was not only a celebration of his individual accomplishments but also a recognition of the countless hours of training and dedication he invested in his craft. "I felt happy at the awards because it shows that the hard work I put in was not for nothing," he shared. "I am grateful to receive my national colours."

Now, Khanye will be shifting his focus to the upcoming USSA Karate tournament taking place in Pietermaritzburg. He is determined to work hard to defend his title from last year, when he walked away with a gold medal in the U60kg elite category.
