Prof Felicity Burt is from the Division of Virology, in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Free State (UFS) and National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS). She currently holds a NRF-DST South African Research Chair in vector-borne and zoonotic diseases. Professor Burt and her research group investigate arboviruses and zoonotic viruses.

Chair: Disease Resistance and Quality in Field Crops 2021-2025 [Tier 1]

Prof Maryke Labuschagne is currently professor of Plant Breeding in the Department of Plant Sciences and is also leading the NRF SARChI Chair in Diseases and Quality of Field Crops. She has been involved in the training of PhD and MSc students from all over Africa and South Africa for the past 30 years.

Chair: Solid-state Luminescent and Advanced Materials 2023-2027 [Tier 1]

Prof Hendrik C Swart is an NRF B1-rated researcher (internationally acclaimed researchers) and is currently a Senior Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of the Free State. He brought luminescence materials to South Africa early in 1996, after a highly productive sabbatical spent in the lab of Paul Holloway at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Chair: Higher Education and Human Development 2023-2027 [ Tier 1]

Prof Melanie Walker is a graduate of the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the University of Cape Town, where she completed her PhD after teaching at disadvantaged secondary schools for a number of years. She joined the University of the Free State in February 2012 as Senior Research Professor in Higher Education and Human Development. In 2013, she was appointed as NRF Chair in Higher Education and Human Development. She is an A1-rated NRF researcher.

Chair: Pathogenic Yeasts 2018-2023 [Tier 2]

Prof Carolina Pohl-Albertyn obtained her PhD degree in Microbiology in the Department of Microbiology and Biochemistry at the University of the Free State in 1999. In 2005, she was appointed as Researcher and established her research focus in the field of bioactive lipids in pathogenic yeasts.

Prof Ivan Turok holds the Research Chair in City-Region Economies in the Department of Economics and Finance and the Centre for Development Support at the UFS. He has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and 11 books/monographs.
