International Studies Group

UFS strip research

The International Studies Group (ISG) comprises PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and visiting academics with an active research interest in the histories of Central and Southern Africa in particular, and African and global history more generally.

The ISG hosts the respected Stanley Trapido seminar series, named in honour of the life and work of one of the most important and influential historians South Africa has ever produced. Click here for dates of the 2023 Stanley Trapido seminar series.

Another highlight event on the ISG calendar is the off-campus Ramblers seminar series, designed to showcase the work of PhD students from near and far.

All ISG members are encouraged to publish books and articles in leading international journals. In recent years, this has included monographs placed with CUP, MUP, Routledge, Palgrave Macmillan, Brill, Rowman & Littlefield, and Ohio University Press. Articles across a wide range of intellectual and research interests have appeared in the Historical Journal, History Workshop, Business History Review, Journal of African History, Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History, and regularly in the Journal of Southern African Studies.
