Ntimi N Mtawa

Ntimi N Mtawa holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education – (BEd, Sociology, philosophy and history of education; curriculum, pedagogy and assessment), Bachelor of Arts (BA - Honours) in Development Studies, Master’s in Education (MEd) with a particular focus on Higher Education and development from the University of the Western Cape, Cape Town. Having completed his master’s degree in 2014, he joined the Centre for Research on Higher Education and Development (CRHED), University of the Free State in Bloemfontein to pursue PhD studies. He completed his PhD in September 2017. His PhD is located within the broader notion of university-community engagement with special focus on the area of service-learning. It draws from the perspectives of staff, students and external community members to look into the role of service-learning in human development in respect of capabilities enhancement and promotion of human development values. His PhD is foregrounded in three public good strands, namely service-learning for social justice, citizenship formation and public good professionals. His is expected to publish his thesis as a book and other publications.

Dr Mtawa is currently a post-doctoral fellow at the Centre for Research on Higher Education and Development. He is involved in various research projects, publishing and supervision. In addition, he is coordinating and teaching in a service-learning module for Bachelor of Social Sciences in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of the Free State.

Dr Mtawa’s research interests include universities and development particularly the broader notion of human development, community engagement, service-learning, and issues of public good, social justice, citizenship, public good professionals, pedagogy and students’ university experiences.
