UFS Protection Services operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ensuring the safety and security of all students, staff, and visitors on campus.
If you witness a crime or suspicious activity, please report it immediately to UFS Protection Services. You can report incidents anonymously by sending a WhatsApp to 060 984 4629 or an email to investigation@ufs.ac.za
Access cards can be obtained by visiting the Visitors Centre or applying online. They serve as official university identification and are required for access to various facilities and services on campus. The cost for a card is R120.

Access cards must be available at all times while on campus and security personnel can request such from any person on campus.
Parking on campus requires a valid parking permit, which must be displayed visibly on the windshield. Permits are issued annually, and temporary permits are available for short-term use. Consult the campus maps for information on designated parking zones.

You can report it to the Protection Services 24/7 Operational Centre or to the Sexual Offence Response Team (SORT), a group that provides direct support to those affected by gender-based violence, sexual harassment, and discrimination. Protection Services personnel are specially trained to assist victims of sexual violence. Reports can be made at any time and during office hours at Protection Services:

Yes, you can request a security escort if you feel unsafe. Simply contact Protection Services and a security officer will be assigned to accompany you to your destination, whether it is class, residence, or your vehicle. This is an on-campus service only – an escort service is not provided off-campus due to legal restrictions.
Security personnel are stationed at key locations across the campuses, including main entrances, parking areas, and buildings such as the UFS Sasol Library and Thakaneng Bridge. They also patrol the campuses on foot and in vehicles 24/7.

Yes, contractors and regular visitors can apply for permanent access cards, which allow them access to campus facilities. Applications can be done online or at the Visitors Centre. The cost is R120.

All vehicles must obtain an access permit annually before 28 February. Vehicle access permits can be purchased from Protection Services (R55). The permit is valid for one year and must be displayed on your vehicle at all times while on campus.
Yes, all gates are equipped with 50 kg mobile fire extinguishers, and many buildings have intruder alarms and fire detection systems in place to ensure campus safety. Regular fire drills are also conducted to prepare staff and students for emergencies.
Fire extinguishers and first-aid kits are available at all main entrance gates and in key buildings such as libraries, lecture halls, and residences. Staff are trained in their use, and the equipment is regularly checked to ensure readiness in case of an emergency.
