PROGRAMME INFORMATION

Name of SLP: Principles of Patient Blood Management for Medical Doctors
SLP Code: PBMD1804S

SCOPE OF INFORMATION

Short Description of the SLP: "Patient blood management (PBM) is a patient-centered, systematic, evidence-based approach to improve patient outcomes by managing and preserving a patient's own blood, while promoting patient safety and empowerment" (Shander et al. 2022). PBM is multidisciplinary and is one of the few areas in medicine where patient outcomes are improved, while reducing healthcare costs.

In this programme, we will follow the three-pillar approach of PBM: identify and treat anaemia, prevent and manage bleeding and support the patient. In addition, we will focus on patient-centred decision making, and provide guidance on how you can implement PBM in your setting.

The programme is designed specifically for the African setting. It will enable you to critically understand PBM and implement it wherever you are working as a doctor.
