Short Description of the SLP: |
The purpose of this programme is to teach participants to be operator sedationists, dedicated sedation practitioners and sedation trainers.

Admission Requirements: |
Admission requirements: MBChB, MMed, CMSA Fellowships, HPCSA registration.
Preconditions: - Full and current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa or equivalent body.
- Do not need to be in clinical practice.
- Access to patients is provided by own arrangement. SADC and international students must have appropriate permission to study in South Africa.
Documents: - Application letter motivating why applying for the course.
- CV.
- Certified ID.
- Certified current HPCSA registration.
- Addresses of 2 references (not family or friends).
- International students must provide a scanned, certified copy of their academic transcripts or degree certificate and also provide an equivalent medical board registration document.

There are 10 contact days over the year, including a compulsory electronic induction and enrolment session (The enrolment session is to make them familiar with the environment, tell them about program requirements, and show them where activities will be - usually 1 -2 lectures). Teaching takes place in three blocks: electronic lecture blocks in March and November and face to face simulation training and demonstrations in April. Additionally, 2 one-hour evening lectures are presented by invited experts, usually July and September. In between these blocks, participants undertake 4-5 days of clinical/practical training in separate clinics in Bloemfontein or elsewhere for logbook requirements, by own arrangement with a list of mentors provided. |
