Die Petit Nicolas-boeke vir kinders dateer uit die 1950’s, dus is die Frankryk en die Franse wat u in die film sal sien nie kontemporêr nie. Dit is ‘n heerlike ontsnapping na ‘n ander wêreld en tyd. Hierdie film is so goed soos ‘n vakansie – kom lag vir die mannewales van Nicolas en sy vriende terwyl u die wyse bewonder waarop regisseur Laurent Tirard die boek in ‘n film verander het.

It feels as though we cannot look past the exams at the moment, and yet, soon it will be time to think about the holidays. To help you think, the French Film Club is showing last year’s French blockbuster, Les vacances du Petit Nicolas. The character of the small French schoolboy, freckles and all, was created by those masters of French comic dialogue, René Goscinny (one of the creators of Astérix) and Jean-Jacques Sempé. We need not say more, and we won’t. Not in English, anyway!

Our penultimate film for this year is Ce qui nous lie / Back to Burgundy. This is firstly a film for those who love wine and the wine-making process, as part of the story is about how the children of a winegrower in Burgundy trained his children to take over the estate one day. The film deals with that day; one wine estate, three children.

Er ist wieder da is a satirical comedy directed by David Wnendt, and is based on the 2012 German bestselling novel of the same name by Timur Vermes. In 2014, Adolf Hitler wakes up in the park where his wartime bunker once stood. As he wanders disoriented through the city, he interprets contemporary society from a Nazi perspective. The film features unscripted vignettes of Oliver Masucci as Hitler interacting with ordinary Germans, interspersed with scripted storyline sequences.

Die Abteilung Deutsch lädt Sie herzlich zu unserem vierten und letzten Filmabend für 2018 ein. Er ist wieder da (2015) wird am 10. Oktober 2018, 19.00 Uhr im Equitas Auditorium (mit englischen Untertiteln) gezeigt.

Er ist wieder da ist eine satirische Komödie von Regisseur David Wnendt, und basiert sich auf dem gleichnamigen deutschen Bestseller (2012) von Timur Vermes. Im Jahr 2014 wacht Adolf Hitler im Park auf, wo sich sein Kriegsbunker einmal befand. Goeiedag aan al die Vriende van die Departement

Die Afdeling Afrikaans en Nederlands nooi u vriendelik uit na ‘n Nederlandse filmaand. Die film, De gelukkige huisvrouw (2010), word op Woensdag 26 September om 19:00 in die Equitas Ouditorium vertoon. Vanaf 18:40 sal daar tradisionele Nederlandse stroopwafels en iets te drinke bedien word.

Die aantreklike Lea (Carice van Houten) geniet haar huwelik met die suksesvolle Harry (Waldemar Torenstra). As lugwaardin reis sy die wêreld vol en sy bring dae lank op die gholfbaan saam met haar vriendinne deur. Na die moeilike geboorte van haar seun, Harry Junior, is Lea effe getraumatiseer met die besef dat sy van nou af haar man met haar seun moet deel. Die film neem die kyker op ‘n reis deur die ernstige, maar ook snaakse, storie van ‘n vrou wat baklei om haar verlede – en hede - weer op koers te probeer kry. De gelukkige huisvrouw is ‘n Nederlandse drama-komedie met Antoinette Beumer as regisseur. Die film is op die Nederlandse debuutroman deur Heleen van Royen gebaseer.

Die onlangse film deur regisseur Nicolas Vanier (2017) vertel die verhaal van ‘n weeskind, Paul, wat deur ‘n boheemse paartjie aangeneem word en daarna die natuur buite die weeshuis ontdek met die hulp van die stroper Totoche, gespeel deur die bekende Franse akteur François Cluzet. Kom kyk gerus hoeke boerseuns die Franse was in die 1920’s!

This month’s movie is not new (it’s from 2007), but it is quite extraordinary. It is also a true story, that of Jean-Dominique Bauby, a victim of ‘locked-in syndrome’. The mundane Bauby had everything: cushy job, beautiful women (one was his ex-wife), vintage cars. Despite his condition, he will do something extraordinary: communicate from within the ‘diving-bell’ that is now his unresponsive body by writing his story by blinking, according to a pre-established code. By doing this, he becomes a butterfly, albeit only for a few blessed moments.

The diving-bell and the butterfly, of Le scaphandre et le papillon, is die ware verhaal van die hoofredakteur van die tydskrif Elle, wat op ‘n jong ouderdom ‘n massiewe beroerte kry. Die titel verwys na sy nou nuttelose liggaam aan die een kant en sy geheue en verbeelding, die vlinder, aan die ander kant. Die film is deur regisseur Julien Schnabel, met roerende spel deur die akteur Mathieu Almaric.

Die Afdeling Afrikaans en Nederlands nooi u vriendelik uit na ‘n Nederlandse filmaand. Die film, Tirza (2010), word Dinsdag 31 Julie om 19:30 in die Equitas Ouditorium vertoon. Vanaf 19:00 sal daar tee, koffie en tradisionele Nederlandse stroopwafels bedien word.

Jörgen (Gijs Scholten van Aschat) se wêreld is besig om inmekaar te tuimel: hy word gedwing om vroeg af te tree terwyl sy eksvrou besig is om hom te treiter. Wanneer sy tienerdogter, Tirza (Sylvia Hoeks), en haar kêrel gedurende ‘n vakansie in Namibië verdwyn, tuimel sy wêreld finaal ineen. Na weke van onsekerheid vertrek Jörgen na Windhoek om sy dogter te gaan soek, maar die hitte, sy gedrinkery en menige slegte herinneringe is besig om hom te kniehalter. Sy enigste geselskap op hierdie reis is ‘n kinderprostituut, Kaisa. Saam vaar hulle die wildernis in op soek na Tirza. Tirza is ‘n Nederlandse drama met Rudolf van den Berg as regisseur. Die film is op die Nederlandse topverkoper deur Arnon Grunberg gebaseer.

Der Baader Meinhof Komplex is a 2008 German crime film directed by Uli Edel, and is based on the 1985 German bestselling non-fiction book of the same name by Stefan Aust. The film tells the true story of the West German far-left militant group the Rote Armee Fraktion (Red Army Faction, or RAF) from 1967 to 1977. The radicalised children of the Nazi generation led by Andreas Baader, Ulrike Meinhof and Gudrun Ensslin, (starring Moritz Bleibtreu, Martina Gedeck, and Johanna Wokalek) are fighting a violent war against what they perceive as the new face of fascism: American imperialism supported by the German establishment. Their acts of terror rocked the very foundations of the still fragile German democracy post-WWII.

Dear film friends

The world / South Africa is a difficult place for children. One of the most moving films made in French about the things adults do to children, is Philippe Claudel’s Il y a longtemps que je t’aime (I’ve loved you so long), which the French Film Club will be showing on 12 June. But because it’s an art movie, don’t expect the obvious. What the obvious seems to be, is that Juliette killed her son and served a long prison sentence for it. The film is about Juliette’s release into society, into her family, and especially into the home of her much younger sister Léa.

It is often very difficult and draining listening to the South African news. Don’t let the subject matter of this film deter you from coming. This is a story about what happens between a caring, sensitive mother and a suffering son. It is not cruel or brutal or aggressive, and you will walk out with something we need so very much in our everyday lives and in the country and world we live in: hope for humanity, and belief in a mother’s love. Hoping to see you there!

Die Afdeling Afrikaans en Nederlands nooi u vriendelik uit na ons eerste Nederlandse filmaand vir 2018.

Die film, The Broken Circle Breakdown (2012), word op Woensdag, 23 Mei, in die EBW Ouditorium vertoon.

Elise (Veerle Baetens) en Didier (Johan Heldenbergh) raak met die eerste oogopslag verlief. Sy besit haar eie tatoeëersalon en hy speel die banjo in ‘n “bluegrass band”. Hulle deel ‘n baie sterk passie vir Amerikaanse musiek en kultuur, met die gevolg dat hul romanse op en van die verhoog af blom. Wanneer ‘n onvoorsiene tragedie hulle familie tref, word alles wat hulle liefhet, getoets. Die film verskaf ‘n roerende blik op ‘n verhouding vanaf begin tot einde, wat vergesel word deur ‘n “foot-stomping bluegrass” klankbaan. The Broken Circle Breakdown is ‘n romantiese melodrama van die hoogste gehalte.

Victoria is a German crime thriller film directed by Sebastian Schipper, starring Laia Costa and Frederick Lau. It is one of the few feature films shot in a single continuous take. A young Spanish woman who has recently moved to Berlin finds her flirtation with a local guy turn potentially deadly as their night out with his friends reveals a dangerous secret.

Who spares a thought for art museums before declaring war? What happens to art during war time? In the magnificently filmed Francophonia, these and other important questions are asked about the fate of the Louvre Collections during the Second World War. Curiously, not by a French director, but a Russian – Aleksandr Sokurov. In this film, half documentary, half dream sequence, Sokurov reflects on much more that the contribution of the director of the Louvre and the German officer who, as the invading power, is now his superior. Is art important? What is the true loss felt by a nation when an art work is moved, hidden or destroyed?

Ons begin die jaar met twee van die bekendste Franse aktrises; die handeling speel af in die buitewyke van Parys (Mantes-la-Jolie), langs die Seine-rivier, maar dit is nie die toeristieke Parys wat mense ken nie. Dit is ‘n buitewyk waarin gewone middelklas mense met beperkte salarisse woon, en waar die uitdagings van die daaglikse bestaan die gevaar loop om mense van hul lewensvreugde te beroof. Soms kies ‘n mens ‘n loopbaan as terapie vir trauma: Claire bring babas in die wêreld ná die selfdood van haar vader, ‘n kampioenswemmer. Maar is dit genoeg?

Barbara (2012), a drama set in the former GDR (East Germany), will be screened on 28 February at 19:00 in the Equitas Auditorium (with English subtitles). Set in 1980, director Christian Petzold's latest work centres on a doctor exiled to a small town in East Berlin as punishment for applying for an exit visa from the German Democratic Republic.

Die Abteilung Deutsch lädt Sie herzlich zu unserem ersten Filmabend für 2018 ein. Barbara (2012), ein Drama, das in der ehemaligen DDR (Ost-Deutschland) spielt, wird am 28. Februar um 19.00 Uhr im Equitas Auditorium (mit englischen Untertiteln) gezeigt. Das Drama, für das Petzold auch das Drehbuch verfasste, ist zur Zeit der DDR im Jahr 1980 angesiedelt und stellt eine Ärztin in den Mittelpunkt, die an ein Provinzkrankenhaus versetzt wird, nachdem sie einen Ausreiseantrag gestellt hat.
