Academic Advising Professional Development (AAPD)
Short Learning Programme (SLP)

What is it? The AAPD is a short learning programme designed to equip student support practitioners (such as academic advisors) with a theoretical foundation, skills, and resources to advance student success through proactive academic advising.
Why is it important? The AAPD explores competencies essential for advisors to practice academic advising effectively. It also equips advisors with the knowledge and skills to design and implement academic advising which advances student success.
How is it implemented? The AAPD is presented in four sittings each year. During the four-day face—to-face SLP, the five components of academic advising are explored:
- The theories and approaches central to the practice of academic advising (conceptual component)
- The models and information for offering adequate advising support (informational component)
-
Skills and approaches needed for advising (relational component)
- Resources and systems to deliver advising (technological component)
- Knowledge and skills to develop advisors (professional component)
