Research (Evidence-Based Change)

Line

What is it? Research and evidence based practices in CTL refer to using sound educational research methodologies, institutional data, and proven teaching approaches to inform our practices. This ensures that our staff support initiatives and teaching strategies are contextualised and grounded in reliable evidence.

Why is it important? Evidence-based practice is vital in higher education to improve student success by replacing anecdotal teaching methods with research-proven strategies. It enables data-informed learning and teaching, supports contextualised active learning, and fosters a culture of continuous improvement, ensuring we adapt to diverse student needs.

How is it implemented? Research at CTL is conducted through evidence-based, collaborative, and data-driven methods, focusing on enhancing student success. It involves institutional data analysis (e.g., SASSE, LMS tracking), research on educational technologies and blended learning, and national collaborations.

What does it look like? For example:
  • The Evidence-Based Change (EBC) focus area uses data analytics to track student progress, monitor LMS engagement, and evaluate large-scale projects such as the GPS@UFS project.
  • The South African Survey of Student Engagement (SASSE) and the Beginning University Survey of Student Engagement (BUSSE) are used to analyse learning experiences at the UFS and at other South African Higher Education institutions.
