National Surveys and Student Engagement

What is it? CTL has led the administration of student engagement surveys in South Africa for over a decade. These surveys provide evidence-based insights into how students experience teaching, learning, and the university environment, and identify educational practices that are linked to student success.
Why is it important? The results support data-informed decision-making, quality enhancement, and the monitoring of change over time at both institutional and module level. The South African Surveys of Student Engagement (SASSE) include three institutional-level surveys: The Beginner Survey of Student Engagement (BUSSE), the SASSE, and the Lecturer Survey of Student Engagement (LSSE), as well as a module- or course-level survey, the Classroom Survey of Student Engagement (CLASSE).
The SASSE surveys generate institutional- and national-level reports that support reflection, benchmarking, and evidence-based enhancement of teaching and learning.
How is it implemented? Institutions and staff are invited to participate in the different surveys at different times of the year. The surveys are administered by the Centre for Teaching and Learning of the UFS, and findings are shared afterwards with participating colleagues.
