South African Surveys of Student Engagement (SASSE) and
Beginner University Surveys of Student Engagement (BUSSE)
What is it? The SASSE and BUSSE surveys test undergraduate and first-time entering students’ engagement using sound theories of student engagement. (Student engagement can be defined as what students do (the time and energy they devote to educationally purposeful activities) and what institutions do (the extent to which they employ effective educational practices to induce students to do the right things).
Why is it important? The SASSE surveys generate institutional- and national-level reports that support reflection, benchmarking, and evidence-based enhancement of learning and teaching.
How is it implemented? Universities are invited to participate in the SASSE and BUSSE at certain times of the year. CTL administers the surveys and provides feedback to the institutions in a workshop after the data has been analysed and interpreted.
