What is it? This unit within the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) helps students improve their critical academic literacy skills, such as reading, writing, and critical thinking. It also supports students in successfully transitioning into university through services like the Writing Centre and the First-Year Seminar module.

Why is it important? CLaSS is important because it helps students develop critical academic skills such as reading, writing, and critical thinking, which are necessary for success at university. It also supports students who may struggle with academic work, and helps them to improve their performance. Overall, it ensures that students are supported when they transition into university and are better prepared to succeed throughout their academic journey.

How is it implemented? CLaSS is implemented at UFS through a range of structured academic support activities:

  • Critical Academic Literacies (CAL) modules: are compulsory first year courses designed to help students develop academic skills like reading, writing, and critical thinking
  • First-Year Seminar (FYS) module: is a compulsory module for first-year students that helps them adjust to university life by developing important academic, personal, and career skills
  • Writing Centre support (Write Site): is the undergraduate writing centre, which helps students with their assignments, essays, and academic writing through consultations and guidance.
Overall, the CLaSS team supports students’ transition into university and develop critical academic skills through workshops, writing support, and continuous academic assistance.
