MSocSc (Nursing): a two-year degree obtained by means of research and a dissertation.

PhD in Nursing: obtained by conducting high-level original research that contributes significantly to the science of nursing.

Postgraduate Diploma in Primary Care Nursing

The Postgraduate Diploma in Primary Care Nursing aims to:

Strengthen and deepen the students’ knowledge and skills in primary care nursing that will enable them to render direct patient care in primary healthcare facilities.

Develop the students’ competencies based on current thinking, practice, and research methods in primary care nursing.

Mode of delivery and duration of the programme

The programme extends over one-year full time study (120 credits). The curriculum is compiled of compulsory modules. A total number of 720 work integrated learning hours needs to be completed at a facility approved and accredited by SANC for the University of the Free State.

Minimum admission requirements

A Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (R425/R174); or

A Diploma in Nursing: General Nurse (R171) with Advanced Diploma in Midwifery (R1497); or

An Advanced University Diploma in Nursing (NQF Level 7); as well as

A minimum two years’ relevant experience (inclusive of community service) post-registration by the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse or General Nurse and Midwife;

Proof of employment detailing primary care nursing experience in years; and

Approval from the employer to register for the programme and to complete the prescribed work integrated learning hours at a facility approved and accredited by SANC for the University of the Free State.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Education aims to:

  • Develop students’ knowledge and skills to contribute to a competent nursing workforce by facilitate learning, student development and socialisation, use assessment and evaluation strategies, as well as participate in curriculum design and evaluate programme outcomes.
  • Empower students to function as change agents and leaders, and to pursue continuous quality improvements in their nurse educator role, engage in scholarship, and function within the educational environment.

Mode of delivery and duration of the programme

The programme extends over one-year full time study (120 credits). The curriculum is compiled of compulsory modules. A total number of 500 work integrated learning hours needs to be completed.

A Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (R425/R174); or

A Diploma in Nursing: General Nurse (R171) with Advanced Diploma in Midwifery (R1497); or

An Advanced University Diploma in Nursing (NQF Level 7); as well as
