Admission requirements for Master of Nursing:
  • Prospective students must consult the Programme Director before submission of an official application form before 30 September of every year to be admitted.
  • To be admitted to a Master’s Degree, a person must have already obtained a Bachelor Honours Degree, a 480-credit professional Bachelor’s Degree or a relevant postgraduate diploma. It is the responsibility of the international students to provide SAQA proof of the NQF level equivalence of their qualifications as registered with SAQA.
  • A weighted average of at least 60% (not rounded to the next integer) in the previous NQF Exit Level 8 qualification is required.
  • Prospective students must have passed the Research Methodology in Nursing for the first time, or another research module as deemed appropriate by the Head of the School with 60% not longer than five (5) years ago.
  • Students must furnish proof of registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC). International students must be registered with a recognised body in their country of origin. 
  • The number of Master students selected is subject to the availability and/or capacity of supervisors. 
  • Students might be required to write additional admission tests.
Admission requirements for Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing:
  • For admission to registration for the degree PhD (Nursing), a student must comply with the stipulations of the UFS General Rules and be in possession of the appropriate Master’s degree from the department concerned or any other qualification deemed adequate by the Senate
  • Prospective students must have obtained a minimum of 65% in the appropriate Master’s degree (NQF Level 9 qualification). It is the responsibility of international students to provide SAQA proof of the NQF level equivalence of their foreign qualifications as registered with SAQA.
  • Students will be selected for this programme.
  • The number of doctoral students selected is subject to the expertise and/or capacity of supervisors

Postgraduate Diplomas

Admission requirements
To be admitted to the postgraduate diplomas programme, the applicant must have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (R174).
  • A four-year comprehensive Diploma in Nursing (R425).
  • A Diploma in Nursing: General Nurse (R171) with Advanced Diploma in Midwifery (R1497).
  • An Advanced University Diploma in Nursing (NQF Level 7).
  • Proof of registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse or General Nurse and Midwife.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience (inclusive of community service) post-registration by the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse or General Nurse and Midwife
