Kraft Brewing Co

Kraft Brewing

Blou bessie Gin

As brewers and blenders of craft beer and gin in the Bloemfontein area, Kraft Brewing Co is dedicated to exploring the science and technology of brewing the perfect beer. Their philosophy is to brew a bold and exciting beer that will cultivate a passion for craft beer among both established and novice beer drinkers.

Kraft Brewing Co (formerly known as Kovsie Brewing) was founded in 2012 as an initiative of postgraduate students. This microbrewery and adjunct Brew School was established in collaboration with the Department of Microbiology and Biochemistry at the University of Free State.

The primary role of Kovsie Brewing was to establish an accredited fermentation-based curriculum at the University of the Free State to educate under- and postgraduate students in the scientific process involved in the production of beer and fermentation. Secondly, its function as a multi-disciplinary platform stimulates interaction between students from various fields of study, including marketing- and entrepreneurship programs. Lastly, it promotes a responsible beer culture in the University of the Free State campus and the greater Bloemfontein area. Currently, the craft beer industry in Bloemfontein is in its infancy; educating the public through craft beer is the best strategy to increase positive beer culture.

Award-winning beer makers Dr Errol Cason, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Animal Science, and Dr Christopher Rothmann, postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Animal Sciences, are looking forward to opening a fermentation institute on the Paradys Experimental Farm.

At the fermentation institute on the farm, these home brewers and owners of Kraft Brewing Co hope not only to continue brewing beer but also to teach others about the fermentation process. Installation of the vessels, which were previously part of the South African Brewery’s World of Learning, is almost complete.
